With a slight turn of his head, not enough to obstruct the camera's view, Gus turns to speak softly to his brother. 'Look at thaaat,' he mutters. Eric winces again. Gus begins describing Darla's features as they watch her change, putting emphasis on how young she looks. 'Don't tell me that doesn't bring out something in you, Ricky. Coming up the walkway to a large house, Rebecca's parents (Karen and Bill) are greeted at the top by Harold and Diane, a married couple of roughly the same age as them. Todd looks heartbroken - why didn't she just say something to him? If she was worried he was going to react badly, she should know him well enough by now that he would respect her wishes. Everyone treats him like he's so damn sensitive, but she never treated him like that, in fact that was one of the reasons he loved spending time with her so much is because he felt she 'got' him. Why did she have to cut him off without so much as an explanation or a goodbye? Rebecca looks uncomfortable - she brushes off his questions and moves to leave but Todd blocks her way. He gets more confrontational - he says he's noticed how she looks miserable, how she doesn't smile in any of the new pictures she's been tagged in, how her body language has changed to shut herself off from everyone. He's been worried about her, he just wants to have a fucking conversation with her, he misses her. Why is she acting like this?

Seeing no escape, Rebecca breaks down and admits - it wasn't because she realized he had feelings for her that she broke things off with him, it's because she had feelings for him. She never really realized it (or at least never admitted it to herself) until that night, but it scared her. And it scared her even more that he seemed into her too, because that would make it even harder to pretend like things were normal. She was worried that if she tried to talk to him about it, if she let him know how she felt, they'd do something she'd regret, so she decided it would be better for them both to make a clean break.

Todd looks at her incredulously, and scoffs sadly. Well, she was right about that. Now that he knows how she feels about him, he DOES want to do something they might regret later. She shrinks back, but he closes the gap, gently extending his arm out to the wall to discourage her from leaving the room or retreating further. He wants to make up for lost time. He wants her to make it up to him. He wants to kiss her. Can he kiss her? She takes a deep sigh, bites her lip... she's determined to say no, but despite herself she says 'yes'.

It's a drag, but I'm hoping it won't be for much longer.' The doctor smiles politely and says 'Well, we have your contact information now so if more of these opportunities come along, we'll be sure to contact you.' He finishes taking her blood pressure, notes something on his clipboard, and then tells her he'll take her heart rate now. 'Do I have permission to touch your chest?' Jamie looks taken aback - she supposes so, but don't they usually check at the neck? 'I prefer my own methods,' the doctor insists, and reaches his hand towards her chest to feel her heart. Again, his hand brushes her breasts - this time he doesn't apologize. Jamie looks a bit flustered and is about to speak up, but thinks better of it.

After a long awkward moment, the doctor releases his hand from her chest and notes something on the clipboard. He pats his legs, stands up, and says great - they're ready to get started! Jamie starts to argue that she's just wiping sweat off when the doctor cuts her off - 'If you want to disagree with my methods, that's fine, you can leave at any time and I'll just move on to the next subject.' Jamie realizes how bad she needs the compensation, and holds her tongue. 'What's next, then?' she asks. He tells her to go grab the exercise mat a few feet away. As she turns around to fetch it, he runs his finger along the sweaty bike seat and then sniffs or licks his fingertip.

Once the mat's in place in the floor center, the doctor proceeds to have Jamie remove her shoes and socks, and then do various flexibility tests - bend over and touch your toes, sit legs spread and reach forward, assume various yoga poses... he licks his lips as he watches each of these poses, which thanks to her sweat-drenched clothes and no bra are extremely revealing. Dr. Greenwood reminds her that he's monitoring her physical responses to stress and stimulus. He says that now that they've gotten the stress tests out of the way, it's time for the stimulus tests. CUT to a white room. A digital version of Aidra slowly wakes up and lifts herself off the ground. She looks around and sees three of her classmates, all sitting cheerfully and silently in their uniforms. She is also fully dressed in her school clothes. Politely, she walks over and asks who they are. Equally polite, each girl responds with her full name, age, and home room number. Aidra smiles and shares her name and age, too. She can't remember her home room for some reason. She asks why they are waiting. One of the classmates, Anna, tells her they are waiting for the General. Aidra seems confused, searching her mind to remember who he is. Another classmate, Audrey chimes in, reminding Aidra that he is in charge. He comes almost every day to fuck them. One girl per day. Mrs. Kent looks scandalized - that's no way to talk about her grandfather. Sophie rolls her eyes. 'I'm just saying, what am I even going to have to talk about with this guy? Shouldn't dad be the one to get stuck with all this family bonding crap?' Mrs. Kent stops hurrying around for a moment and puts her hand on her waist matter-of-factly. 'Actually, Sophie, Blake is supposed to be just a couple years older than you. So who knows, maybe you'll have a lot in common.' For the first time, Sophie looks up from her phone in a moment of genuine surprise, before shaking her head and returning her attention to texting. 'Probably still a weirdo,' she mutters. Her mom shushes her disapprovingly and then continues her lastminute tidying into the other room. A few seconds later, she calls from the other room that she thinks she hears him coming to the door but has her hands full, can Sophie answer it? Sure enough, moments later there's a knock on the door. Sophie groans, puts down her phone and the camera tracks her as she trudges to open the door. A handsome and charming man dressed similar to Sophie is at the other side of the door, a duffel bag slung over his shoulder. From Sophie's POV we see him flash a friendly smile and extend his hand towards the camera for a handshake. 'Hey, you must be my new niece,' he grins, 'I'm Uncle Blake.'

CUT TO TITLE PLATE

Several days later, Blake and Sophie are hanging out in what's evidently from the feminine decor Sophie's old room, only now there are some of Blake's things strewn about giving it a lived-in vibe. The two of them are sitting casually across from each other on a sprawling bed, or perhaps Sophie is on the bed and Blake is sitting in a nearby chair. He is recounting to Sophie some stories about one of his recent cross-country hitchhikes, and Sophie hangs on his every word. After the climax of his latest story, he pulls out his phone to show her some pictures he took from the trip. He gets up from where he's sitting and sits back down intimately close to Sophie, and starts showing her the pictures. Tight camera angles of Blake watching Sophie's face while continuing their conversation and looking at the pictures suggests tension, like an animal predator scoping out its prey. Coyly, he turns his hitchhiking anecdote sexual by telling Sophie about a one-night-stand with another traveler. He starts off as telling it like any other story, but then starts to describe the encounter more and more graphically. He relishes as Sophie blushes and has trouble meeting his gaze. Eventually he ends the story by saying it was an experience he'll never forget, and then asks what her most memorable sexual encounter is. Sophie embarrassed admits that she's a total virgin, she's never even kissed a guy before. 'Aren't you 18?' he asks incredulously. Sophie nods. She supposes she's been a bit of a late bloomer. Blake suggests he could teach her how to kiss - Sophie pulls back, flustered, and he shrugs and says at least it would be better to try it with someone she trusts than with a stranger. Sophie stutters a bit and then makes up a lame excuse to leave the room.

CUT to that evening, Sophie and her mother are in the kitchen brewing a pot of coffee while Sophie is asking her mom questions about what to do when you like someone, how do you know whether to make a move or not, etc. Mrs. Kent expresses interest in hearing the details - 'who's the boy?' - and despite Sophie's attempts to keep the conversation vague, she reveals small details ('I haven't known him long', 'he's had a lot more sexual experience than me', etc.). Her mom gets increasingly agitated as she realizes it must be Uncle Blake, especially since the past few days Sophie and he have been inseparable, and she asks Sophie point-blank whether it's Blake she has a crush on. As soon as Sophie admits it, her mother gets agitated, she calls into the other room for Mr. Kent to come and admonishing Sophie for making a huge mistake.

Sophie tries to calm her down, but when Mr. Kent comes to see what's wrong and Mrs. Kent explains the situation, things only escalate further. Throughout the argument, both parents interrogate her with probing questions ('has he tried to make a move on you?'), they try to convince her to forget about him ('you're family for god's sakes' - to which Sophie protests 'that's just because of some piece of paper, before gramps' wedding we weren't related at all! ... ... 'the guy's a loser, he never stays in one spot for more than a few months, what do you see in him?!' etc.) and finally they threaten to send Blake packing. Sophie starts crying that they're overreacting, that he's not like that, in fact he probably doesn't even like her like that. It was all just a stupid crush. Mr. Kent says he's going to have to talk to Blake and Sophie begs him not to, he'll embarrass her and ruin things, but the dad refuses to listen. If Blake is going to stay under their roof, it'll be under their terms, not his.

CUT to even later that night, Sophie is sitting upright on the couch in light pajamas clothes, it's evident she was trying to rest on the couch but muffled sounds of shouting from upstairs are keeping her awake. Finally, the shouting ends, followed by an upstairs door opening and slamming audibly. Sophie rearranges her pillow angrily, sighs, and then lies down on her back, eyes open staring blankly at the ceiling. After several seconds of silence, the same upstairs door clicks open and closed again, this time more quietly, followed by the sounds of the stairs creaking under the weight of someone. Blake peeks his head over the couch into view of Sophie's upward gaze.

She sits up again, and he takes a seat beside her on the couch. 'I guess you must have heard all that, huh?' Blake says with fake sheepishness. Sophie apologizes - she shouldn't have opened her big mouth.Blake smiles sympathetically - it's not her fault. Besides, he thinks it's cute that she has a crush on him. Not that he feels that way about her of course. Embarrassed, Sophie says she knows, and she was never going to act on her feelings anyways. She was just being stupid. Good, Blake insists, because it's important to him they stay friends. In fact, more than friends - he's hoping that one day they can really be family, not just by law but have a real family bond. Sophie nods and says she hopes so too. 'Well you know, Sophie, it's important for family to trust each other,' Blake says with a hint of admonishment. He can't exactly open up to her if she's going to go telling her mom and dad everything they say and do together. Sophie desperately promises that'll never happen again - she never wants to relive how her parents shamed and embarrassed her tonight.

Blake's tone of admonishment gets even more exaggerated. Well he didn't appreciate being yelled at by her dad either. Especially when he hadn't done anything wrong, when in fact all he'd done was embrace them as his new family. Sophie apologizes for her dad - she wished she'd never gotten them involved at all. Blake says it's ok - it was their first fight as brothers. There's bound to be plenty more.

They sit in silence for a moment. Blake leers up and down Sophie's scantily clad body before snapping his eyes back to meet hers when she looks back at him. He smiles charmingly. 'I guess your dad's just trying to protect you. Like, if I really were some kind of creep, I'd probably try to take advantage of you. Katlyn starts to frantically gather their things. 'He might not be bad. He might know something, like the woman who drove us back in the beginning.' He continues. Katlyn asks him what he looks like. He looks pretty normal, Jacob replies. They decide to go approach him.

CUT to inside a derelict building. The couple approach the window and a man's shoulder steps into frame. He is the man Jacob saw earlier, another drifter. The couple wave their weapons above their arms and tell the man they mean no harm. They want to know if he has any information. The man hesitates before slowly sticking his head out of the door. 'You tell me first,' he says. The couple look at each other before Jacob replies that they heard it was an asteroid. Nothing works. No GPS, no internet, no electricity. The man pauses before replying 'I heard it was a nuclear attack, but I've only met 13 other people.' He pauses, before adding 'I also know where some water is.' Katlyn jumps in, demanding to know where. The man sticks his head out a little further and says he'll tell them but only if they give him some of their own water first. Jacob clutches the jug tightly. He weighs his options before Katlyn urges him to do it. Jacob agrees, and the man pulls out a dirty plastic container. Jacob fills it up and the man eagerly takes it, before telling them there is a well two miles up the road. He disappears inside, and the couple turn to keep walking.

CUT to the middle of nowhere. The couple walk through the blazing sun, with nothing in sight. Their jug is empty, and both are growing desperate. They argue about the water before coming upon a body lying in the road. Looking down on it, they root through the person's pockets but only find a dead phone.

Katlyn pleads that she is hungry, and Jacob tells her that water is more important. They need to keep walking. He tosses the phone in the dirt.

SMASH CUT to a gravel road, as the couple come up a large empty house. 'It's probably been raided already,' Jacob says but Katlyn urges them to check. They go to the front door and enter.

CUT to inside the house. It is still. There are no lights on, except for the natural light streaming in. Jacob tells Katlyn to wait while he checks the rest of the house. While she stands alone nervously, she starts to look around. A coffee cup rests on the table. It is moldy inside. She spots a pencil and snatches it up, stuffing it in her pockets. Then she sees something that shocks her: a flickering light coming from behind a closed door. She screams out to Jacob, who rushes back in.

'The whole house has been stripped,' he says. 'Like I told you.' Katlyn points to the light. The couple stare in shock. They haven't seen a single light on since it happened. Guarding his girlfriend, Jacob slowly opens the door to reveal a library with several oil lamps burning. In the middle of the floor, is a pile of tuna cans.

The couple's eyes go wide, and they pounce on them. This is more food than they've had in weeks. They try to chew them open and bang them against the floor and with books to open them. Katlyn even tries to use the pencil she found in desperation. Nothing. They collapse in frustration as a rifle barrel slowly slides out from behind a curtain in the corner of a room. A man, dressed in clean tactical clothes and greased back hair steps out. He tells them to freeze.

Jacob shields his girlfriend and begs the man to put his gun down. They are not bad people, they are just passing through. The man asks them what they know. Nervously, they reply that it might be an asteroid or a nuclear attack. There is no GPS, internet or electricity and there is supposed to be water near here. They think it's been 2 or 3 months, but they aren't sure. The man studies them before slowly putting the gun down. 'There's a well at the end of my property,' he replies. Jacob asks if they would be allowed to fill up their jug. The man smiles and sits down. 'I believe it was Kessler Syndrome,' he says matter-of-factly. Katlyn asks if he is a doctor. 'I was a high school science teacher,' he replies. There is an awkward silence, as the couple stray towards the door. 'It was a theory proposed in the seventies by NASA,' he continues. 'The idea that if enough space objects were to collide, the debris they would cause would litter our atmosphere with so much junk that all the satellites would come crashing down.' Katlyn asks her boyfriend if that is true. He shrugs his shoulders. 'No telecommunications, no electrical grids, no laws.' The man adds, laughing to himself. Jacob asks again if they can use his well. The man reaches into his pocket and pulls out a can opener. 'How about you help yourself to these cans, as well?' Katlyn freaks out and reaches for the opener, when the man pulls his hand away. 'I'll give this to you if you let me fuck your pussy!' He says, putting the opener back in his pocket. Jacob lunges at him but the man picks up his gun. 'I will defend myself,' he threatens. Jacob tells him that his girlfriend is not for sale. 'It's a trade,' he says calmly. 'But not until we get one last hug as a family,' the father insists, and the daughter happily obliges. She's going to miss them over the next two months, she says as she hugs them tight, but she hopes they have a good time with the new exchange student. The couple exchange a knowing glance, unseen by their daughter, and say they're sure they will. The daughter says her final goodbyes, and hops into the passenger seat of the car. She waves to her parents through the window, and they back to her, as the car starts to pull away. 'It's really happening,' the father says discreetly to his wife as he waves, 'it still doesn't feel real.' 'I know,' the mother agrees, and wistfully asks her husband, '...do you think she'll be okay?' The father puts his other hand on his wife's back and rubs it reassuringly. 'We can't think about that now,' he says as he continues to wave, 'what's done is done. She's not our problem to worry about anymore.' With the car turning out of sight, he drops his waving hand and turns to his wife, clasping her hands. 'Now come on, we have a lot to do before our new daughter gets here.' As he says the words 'new daughter', they both look at each other with nervous excitement, the expression of two people about to do something they've never done before but are clearly looking forward to. They turn to head back to the front door together, holding each other at the waist with an excited spring in their step.

CUT TO TITLE PLATE

The couple emerges on the inside of their house from the front door, but it's clearly a different day and they are neither alone nor empty-handed. The Valentines seem nervously eager to impress Cassie, the same way a goofy teen boy might try to win over his date's dad. 'I mean, mom and dad,' she grins and says cheekily, and they look positively delighted to hear the words. In good spirits, she leaves for the mall.
